EIS - Bridges

Bridges in England, Scotland and Ireland

There were many bridges, much like any other place in the US or around the world.  However, some of the bridges were from many years ago and in some cases from the Roman times.

Most of the bridges we took pictures of were viaduct style construction.  Some were even aqueducts for barges to travel along.

Although this picture is not of a large bridge, it is the bridge on the 18th fairway of the old course and named Swilken Bridge at St Andrews in Scotland.

In the Harry Potter movies, you usually see the train crossing a viaduct bridge on its way to Hogwarts.  The bridge, the Glenfinnan viaduct, in this picture is the viaduct used for those scenes.  Also notice the train; it is also the same one used in the movie.  We were not at a higher elevation overlooking the train, so that means this picture happens to be from a postcard.  The picture of the viaduct we took did not come out so good, or at this particular spot.

This bridge is the one mentioned in the tale Tam O’Shanter.  Named Brig O’Doon, the bridge dates from the 1400’s, and now paved leading to the entrance on this side, but the other side ends in a very narrow path leading through trees.
